How I Prevent My Dachshunds From Jumping Off the Couch – 2 options (what I found in my research)
- Completely prevent her/him from getting on the couch in the first place.
- Put the couch against the wall and completely gate it off so the only way on and off the couch was the ramp.
Since a common issue for the Dachshund is IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), avoiding jumping is the recommendation.
Dachshunds are at a 10–12 times higher risk of IVDD than other breeds, and an estimated 19–24 % of Dachshunds show signs of IVDD during their lifetime.
The Dachshund’s elongated body and stubby legs make the animal more susceptible to spinal issues. It doesn’t slow down the animal, nor do her legs. The Daschy loves to be where the pet parent is and will jump on furniture capable of incredible heights.
The recommendation is to keep the dog from jumping no higher than a two-foot height and offer the animal devices like ramps to keep their jumping to a minimum.
It might not be easy to teach a Daschy that she can’t reach the moon without hurting her tiny body; it’s not impossible. As with all other training, start early, be consistent and persistent – because she will be.

Ramp or Soft Stairs – I’ve read that a ramp is better for your Daschy- personally I like the stairs as I feel like they take up less room but after researching and reading all of this I need to invest in a ramp for my Rosie. I do have a ramp outside to my little girls back yard fenced in area and she learned how to use it after I blocked off the steps area – and dropped treats up and down the ramp to encourage her to go up and down. Will be a little harder blocking off my couch and recliner.

My niece is dealing with this on her lil fur baby – Penny is 7 years old & very slender so she’s not dealing with a weight issue as that can be a problem. My niece has had therapy done with her and medication – it worked 3 years ago..but last week she started having issues again – fingers crossed the meds work again for her. I’ve heard where the expensive surgery has been a total fail 🙁 I have had Daschy for over 20 years and thankfully never had to deal with back issues on any of mine. My baby girl I lost in August of 2023 only started using the stairs in her last year of her life and she was 13 when she passed. My little one now Rosie is just 4 years old and I want her to be around a good many more years of healthy living so I got to stop the jumping.
