Best Shampoo

I know some of us are lucky to have dogs who love their bath time. My  girls do NOT love it but thankfully they sit down and deal with it. I had heard if you start them off early and consistently when they are puppies they will be used to it, I don’t know if that’s true or I just got lucky. However I did start Annie off when i got her at 6 weeks old. She got a bath EVERY week and a tiny bit of nail trimming – she’s 10 years old and I can bathe her or trim her nails with no complaints from her. When Rosie came to our home January 2020, I forgot about the nail trimming unfortunately but I did do the bathing…she is fine taking a bath BUT I am still having to take her to the groomers for her nails.

But then there are others that deal with chasing down the pup, the thrashing, wailing and then there are always those SAD SAD puppy eyes.

All that to say, when you bathe the dogs, you really want it to be worthwhile—you want them to come out clean and sweet-smelling, and you want it to LAST.

Directions:

The key is to wet the dog and do a light shampooing, rinse that shampoo (you don’t have to get it all out) then shampoo the dog again and really work it down to the skin. If you’re treating a skin condition, let it sit for at least 5 minutes. The reason for the two shampoos is that the first one breaks down the oil the dog naturally has while the second shampoo is able to penetrate the coat more deeply and get to the skin. If you’re only shampooing your dog once, you’re not getting your dog nearly as clean as you could be.

Out Of The Many Popular Dog Shampoos Out There. Here is the 3 we thought was worth investing in.

We smelled, we soaped up and lathered, we read the tiny list of ingredients. And then picked out 3 favorites.

Best Overall:

  • Based on product excellence alone, we love Purplebone Oatmeal ShampooOpens in a new tab.. It smells SO good and made our dogs incredibly soft. If you’re really looking to splurge and pamper your pup, we think this is the very best option.

Cost: $36.99 for 7.5 L Diluted (It’s premium 15:1 concentration (mix 15 parts water to 1 part shampoo) equals 7.5 Litres of diluted shampoo!)

The Sniff Test: My favorite scent of any of the tested shampoos. Smells like oatmeal and almonds in the best way.

The Lather Test: Excellent lather.

The Ingredient List Test: A little vague and not sure what FDA-approved colors really means.

The Official Ingredient List: Water, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Oatmeal Extract, Cleanser from Refined Soy, Cleanser from refined Coconut Oil, EGMS, Cleanser from Coconut fatty acids, Sugar Cleanser, Vegetable Glycerin, Potassium Sorbate, FDA Approved Colors.

The Verdict: So much that is good here! And I loved the smell. The lather was top-notch, and it kept our dogs silky for longer than any other shampoo. I’d like a bit more specificity in the ingredient list, but it looks pretty good.

Best For Your Money:

We were incredibly impressed by Burt’s Bees Oatmeal ShampooOpens in a new tab.. We had never tried it before and it really is a great shampoo. The only downside was the lack of smell, but for the incredible value I can live with that. The ingredient list, lather, and price-point were all top-notch, so it’ll probably become our new go-to shampoo.

Cost: $7.48 for 16oz

The Sniff Test: Doesn’t really smell like anything.

The Lather Test: Really good lather, especially on fluffy hair.

The Ingredient List Test: Really clean and transparent ingredient list, plus the product is made in the U.S.

The Official Ingredient List: Water, Coco Betaine, Coco Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Camelia sinensis (Green Tea) extract, Colloidal Oatmeal, Honey, Beeswax, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate.

The Verdict: Honestly, pretty thrilled with everything about this except that I would’ve hoped for a little more of a pleasant smell. Love the value and transparency.

Best for Sensitive Skin:

  • If your pet is suffering from allergies or skin issues… Nothing soothes like ALOE VERA and ALMOND OIL. We were incredibly impressed by Pro Pet Works All Natural & OrganicOpens in a new tab. Oatmeal all in one Puppy/Pet Shampoo + Conditioner

Cost: $16.99 for 17 oz (shampoo and conditioner in one)

The Sniff Test: It’s a very fruity/floral scent. Even better is that the smell that stays on the dog after drying is very light – even though the smell from the bottle and while lathering up is strong.

The Lather Test: Speaking of lathering, this stuff gives massive amounts of suds!

The Ingredient List Test: This shampoo did a great job getting my dogs really clean.

The Official Ingredient List: deionized water, surfactant blend derived from natural derivatives (coconut shampoo base), organic aloe vera extract, almond oil, hydrolyzed oat proteins, Vitamins A, D, and E, glycerin, (soothes the skin), glyceryl stearate (emulsifies, makes foam, conditions), wheat germ glycerides, blend of cherry botanical extracts, EGDA (conditioner), EDTA (aids ingredients in blending), proprietary blend of coat and skin conditioners and moisturizers.

The Verdict:  Very thrilled with this one. It’s ideal for sensitive pups as it’s free of added colors, sulfates, alcohol, and fragrance.
